As you might have noticed from our previous recipe posts, we love margaritas. But neither of us had ever had one made with whiskey until we got Mixicles into the capable hands of the Cocktail Contessa and her imagination started running.
Besides rum, what else do you think sunk to the bottom of the ocean? This whiskey take on a margarita is spicy AND has a great kick that's perfect for poolside sipping as the weather warms up.
This recipe uses a combination of Mixicles: Orange Blossom Pomegranate (found in our Distinctive Collection) and Jalapeño Citrus (available in a single-flavor pack as well as in our Essential Collection). Traditionally, margaritas contain tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur. The orange blossom in the Orange Blossom Pomegranate cube stands in for the orange liqueur, and the Jalapeño Citrus cube brings the lime . . . plus some heat!
For a touch of smokiness, add a splash of mezcal. But why stop there? Rim the glass with chili-lime seasoning (like Tajin) and garnish with a slice of pineapple.
Better make two — this is one combination asking for an encore.
- 2 ounces whiskey (or tequila, if preferred)
- 1 Jalapeño Citrus Mixicles® cube
- 1 Orange Blossom Pomegranate Mixicles® cube
- 2 teaspoons orange liqueur (optional)
- Splash of mezcal (optional, but strongly recommended)
- Chili-lime seasoning rim, pineapple spears/wedge for garnish (optional)
Set the Mixicles in a shaker to melt a bit while you prepare the glass with a chili-lime seasoning rim. Add the whiskey, orange liqueur, and a splash of mezcal to a shaking tin. Shake until you no longer hear the Mixicles rattling in the tin. Add ice, shake for 10 seconds more, and strain into a rocks glass filled with ice and rimmed with chili-lime seasoning. Garnish with a pineapple wedge. Dangle your toes in the pool. Sip. Repeat.
